Torri’s Journey

Torri was born and raised in the Bay Area, where his early years were marked by instability. With his mother often unemployed, their family moved around a lot and Torri faced tough choices from a young age. Drawn to the streets, he found himself entangled in a life of selling drugs—a path that led him down a dark road and eventually landed him in prison.

Upon his release, Torri faced the daunting task of rebuilding his life. It was an uphill battle, fraught with challenges and setbacks. After a call to 211 and a referral, Torri connected with Insight Housing and started to chart a new course. With space to breathe and heal, Torri finally found his footing.

Today, Torri appreciates the simple joys of stability, including a studio apartment in Berkeley where he can safely welcome his children. As he works toward joint custody, Torri is also paying it forward. He spends his Sundays cutting hair for free at his church, hoping to connect with youth in his neighborhood and be the source of positivity that he lacked.

“It’s so easy to go the other way, especially when I’ve been in it so long. It’s like breathing almost,” he says. “I want to make working and being productive in a positive way like breathing now.”
