Formerly Berkeley Food & Housing Project
Just in time for World Book Day on April 23, 2022, we are excited to announce a brand-new way to engage with us – introducing the BFHP Book Club!
Starting this month, we will periodically showcase enlightening works of fiction and nonfiction that speak to our mission and core values. We invite you to read along with us as we explore such topics as homelessness, food insecurity, racial and social justice, and more.
Our first title will be Homeless: A Day in the Life by Todd Murphy
We welcome your comments and questions as you read through Todd Murphy’s gripping first-person account of homelessness. What surprised you? What moved you? What inspired you to learn more? Post a comment on our Facebook page, @ us on Instagram or Twitter, or send an email to info@bfhp.org. We look forward to hearing your perspective.
Author Todd Murphy, who himself experienced homelessness in the Bay Area for over 2 years, gives a vivid, candid, and gripping account of a single day in the life of an unhoused person. Written in the style of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, readers are invited into the mind of a nameless narrator, affectionately referred to as “our friend,” as he navigates the everyday challenges of homelessness. Full of wit, sadness, humor, and insight, Homeless: A Day in the Life gives a rare glimpse into a world most of us only view from the outside.
Readers should be advised that this book contains strong language and some vivid descriptions that may be inappropriate for younger or more sensitive readers. We feel that the language used is appropriate given the subject matter and that none of the descriptions are gratuitous or overly graphic, but advise caution, nonetheless.
